This week we had a guest speaker that came and spoke to our class. She shared with us some websites or resources that would help us find information or data that will help us find issues with our campus for us to fix. She taught us about what sustainability is. She gave our group many different ideas on how we can make our campus more sustainable. Some ideas she gave us was making no idle zones for cars, dealing with trash or food waste, and electricity being wasted.

We did this marshmallow challenge where we had a team of four and we were given some a certain amount of sticks, tape, and one marshmallow. We had a certain amount of time and we raced against other teams to find out who could build the tallest building. Our team started off on a good note but when it came close to the end, we put the marshmallow on top and our building collapsed. From this challenge, I learned that teamwork is very important, we should all be working together. I also learned that we shouldn't have waited to put the marshmallow on top last.
The tomato plant that I am using for my lab report is the ʻAnahu tomato. After observing my plant that was growing inside of the classroom for a couple of weeks, it seems like it grew well but slower than I thought. My thoughts when we were to take care of the tomato on our own at home weren't so great because I thought of it as more work or adding to chores. I was scared that I might kill my tomato plant because I forget to do things a lot. But after I made a plan of what to do with the tomato at home like where to put it, what to put on the plant, when to water it, I felt more confident in myself.
The locally sourced meal that I ate wasn't really a meal because I couldn't find a good meal to eat. I only had fruits because they had other things but most of them had something in them that wasn't locally sourced. I found this out because I asked them if everything they were selling was locally sourced. The place I went to find locally sourced foods was Haleiwa's farmers market because that was one of the closest farmers market. The only locally sourced foods I got from there were coconut, banana, papaya, and other things.
In quarter 1 of Mālama Honua I learned a lot and had a great time. I learned how to take care of a garden by going as a class to our own garden and taking care of it. From a huakaʻi around our campus, I learned the names of buildings and history behind its name and the building itself. Some of the things we learned about our campus were very interesting. I also learned things about the weather like how hurricanes are formed because it was hurricane season and multiple hurricanes appeared and came close to Hawaii.
I thought that this reading wasn't really that true because that means anyone could do what Hawaiians do and call themselves Hawaiian when really they aren't. I don't think a Hawaiian blood person doesn't need to be doing or living the old Hawaiian ways because most Hawaiians don't even do that anymore because there are better and easier ways. Its hard too because there are more things going on like work or school, there is no time to do those things for some Hawaiians. You can still be Hawaiian and not do those things because you are Hawaiian by blood, but I do think that you should know and understand these things and the culture.
What I look forward to this Mokauea learning experience is going on the canoe, going with friends, going somewhere I have never been especially a small island, helping out with the fishpond, and learning new things. So basically I am excited about everything on this learning experience because it sounds supper fun. I can't wait to try and make a difference and to learn more about my culture.
A Hawaiian scientist is a person that does things based on the Hawaiian culture. They never forget who they are, where they are from, and their culture which is the Hawaiian culture. Its like Mālama Honua, a class that does something for the Hawaiian culture and this class takes care of the land, Hawaii. A Hawaiian Scientist uses their culture background to study and explore.
From my observation of the Hurricane Lane that was recent was that it wasn't as bad as we expected. We expected there to be very strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms but it wasn't that terrible. The winds weren't that strong, the wasn't a lot of rain, and there were no thunderstorms at all. There were no animals around, the water was all murky and dirty so you couldn't see any fish. People were all indoors or getting things outside prepared for the hurricane. But everyone prepared for nothing because the Hurricane Lane turned into a tropical storm, nothing terrible happened to anyone where I lived and there were no floods..
